EMERGENCY SERVICE PROVIDERS HONORED AT REGIONAL BANQUET

 On Thursday May 13th, 2004 the Regional Emergency Medical Services Council of Lycoming, Tioga, and Sullivan Counties, presented awards at their Annual Recognition Banquet, held at the Genetti Hotel, Williamsport.

The event was well attended with 140 volunteer and career EMS and Rescue personnel, and special guests.  In attendance were Lycoming County Commissioners Dick Nassberg and Ernie Larson, Sullivan County Commissioner Betty Reibson, and Tioga County Commissioners Mark Hamilton.

Also in attendance was Keynote Speaker Rick Flinn, Special Assistant to the Secretary of Administration for Continuity of Government & Operations.

Old Lycoming Township police officer, Moe Sponhouse was awarded the Lycoming County First Responder of the Year Award. Moe successfully helped deliver a baby in Old Lycoming Twp. this year prior to ALS arrival.  Moe is also the recipient of the 2004 PENNSYLVANIA First Responder of the Year Award.

Loyalsock’s Tom Miller was awarded Lycoming County EMT of the Year. Tom has been a lifetime member and volunteer at Loyalsock and was recognized because of his wonderful talents not only within the field but also for his ability to lead and support others within the field and those just starting out.

Paramedic of the Year was awarded to Jeff Hutchins of the Susquehanna Health System. Jeff is an amazing paramedic all of the time, but was specifically recognized here for care he rendered last Thanksgiving to a class I patient of a MVA. The techniques Jeff used to care for the aortic aneurysm the patient was suffering have since been used as examples by Geisinger Trauma Surgeons.

Josh Fremberg, a Susquehanna Health System Paramedic and PA DOH EMT Instructor, was awarded EMS Instructor of the Year. Josh has been recognized for his outstanding teaching ability and more specifically, his ability to relate to students so that they understand practical concepts of educational material.

James Pfleegor was awarded Dispatcher of the Year. Jim has been employed by the Lycoming County Communications Centerfor over 20 years. He is known for his willingness to lend a hand at any given time and his passionate efforts within EMS.  He also serves as a volunteer EMT and fire chief with the Nisbet Volunteer Fire Company.

Rescue Technician of the Year was presented to Chief JJ Magyar, who has led Montgomery Volunteer Fire Company to be one of the first in the state to be recognized as an Advanced Rescue. JJ also a career Paramedic, is a member of the Lycoming Rescue Task Force and the PA USAR, Squad 2.

Volunteer of the Year was presented to Jeff Neyhart. As an EMT Jeff responded to over 470 calls in 2003 with the First Ward Fire Company Ambulance in South Williamsport.  He is an excellent leader within his community and Fire/EMS Service. Jeff continually strives to improve EMS within his community.

The 2004 Lycoming County and LTS Regional Ambulance Service of the year was awarded to the Montgomery Volunteer Fire Company.  This award is based on achieving excellence in response, personnel, training, equipment, data collection, and public education.

Kline Dewire was presented with a special recognition award. for his outstanding leadership and participation not only in EMS, but also within community. Kline is a volunteer with the Hughesville, Old Lycoming and Loyalsock Fire Companies and is employed by Susquehanna Health System as a staff Paramedic stationed at the Loyalsock VFC. He is a state Fire Academy instructor, Department of Health and Rescue Instructor, EMS Instructor, and was responsible for developing a practical educational program on Bioterrorism and WMD for pre-hospital providers in the LTS Region. Kline has also been instrumental in the formation and leadership of the Lycoming County Rescue and Decon Task Forces. He has served as chairman for Lycoming County LEPC and is a member of several other committees in the community.

WELLSBORO, PA—Henry Brooks, a paramedic at Soldiers & Sailors Memorial Hospital (SSMH), Wellsboro, was selected as the Tioga County Paramedic of the Year at the Lycoming, Tioga,
Sullivan Regional Emergency Medical Services
Banquet held Thursday, May 13, at the Genetti
Hotel in Williamsport.

Presenting the award to Henry was Mark Hamilton, Tioga County Commissioner. “Henry is a true asset to the SSMH Advanced Life Support (ALS) program,” said Kelle B. Johnson, EMT-P, ALS Manager. “He is an excellent paramedic, always providing quality patient care and ensuring that the unit is prepared for the next call.”

Henry has had a long career in the medical field. In 1986, he joined the Army and served as a medic for two years. He joined the Middlebury Fire Department in 1988 where he very active as an EMT and firefighter for 12 years. From 1989-1990, Henry worked as a phlebotomist in the SSMH laboratory. He graduated from The Williamsport Hospital Paramedic Training Institute in December 1991 and has worked as a paramedic at SSMH since that time. During his time at SSMH, Henry has been an instructor of cardiopulmonary resuscitation, Basic Trauma Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support courses. Henry is currently certified in Advanced Cardiac Life Support, Pediatric Advanced Life Support, and Neonatal Resuscitation.

Henry was nominated for Tioga County’s Paramedic of the Year by the Morris Firemen’s Ambulance Association. Representatives from the ambulance association stated that “Henry treats his patients and the ambulance crew wonderfully and he always makes each call an educational experience for the ambulance crew.”

Other award winners from Tioga County included Amos Osborn, Morris Firemen’s Ambulance Association, who was named Tioga County EMT (Emergency Medical Technician) of the Year; and Steve Kreger, also from the Morris Volunteer Fire Company, who was recognized as the Tioga County EMT Instructor of the Year.

Merri Montgomery, Sullivan County Director of Emergency Services and Sullivan County Commissioner Betty Reibson presented two awards.  The first was a special recognition award presented in absentia to Mary Lu McGlothlin, Ambulance Captain of the Hillsgrove VFC for her years of service and dedication to her community and Region.
 
The recipient of the Sullivan County EMT of the Year Award was presented to Bill Black, Ambulance Captain of the Laporte Volunteer Fire Company.
